How to Make the Weekend Feel Longer: 10 Simple Tips

Is it just me, or does the weekend go by ridiculously fast? One minute you’re celebrating Friday, and the next thing you know, it’s Sunday evening and you’re already thinking about everything you have to do on Monday. If you’ve ever wondered how to make the weekend feel longer, I’ve got a few tips that can help you make the most of your days off.

How to make the weekend feel longer

Whether you want to squeeze in more fun activities, catch up on rest, or just enjoy a slower weekend, here are 10 simple ways to make your weekends feel longer.

How to Make the Weekend Feel Longer

1. Get Your Housework Done Throughout the Week

One of the easiest ways to free up more time on the weekend is to get some of your housework done during the week.

Instead of saving all your cleaning, laundry, and household chores for Saturday or Sunday morning, try spreading them out over a few days.

For example, you could clean your kitchen on Monday, do laundry on Wednesday, and save dusting and vacuuming for Thursday.

And you don’t have to spend hours cleaning every day, either. Even 15 to 20 minutes here and there can make a difference.

That way, when Friday rolls around, you’re starting your weekend with a clean space and fewer things on your to do list.

2. Plan Something Fun to Look Forward to

I don’t know about you, but whenever I don’t intentionally plan something for the weekend, the days simply fly by.

Before I know it, it’s Sunday evening, and I’m sitting there wondering where all my free time went.

So, one of my favorite tips is to actually make plans for the weekend.

And they don’t have to be anything extravagant or expensive!

You could:

  • Go out for brunch with your friends
  • Visit a local farmers market
  • Check out a festival or community event
  • Spend the afternoon at the beach
  • Plan a movie night
  • Try a new restaurant or coffee shop
Hangout with friends

3. Wake Up a Little Earlier

Okay, I know this one is easier said than done… BUT hear me out!

If you’re naturally a morning person, waking up a little earlier can give you more time to enjoy your weekend.

I’m a morning person and so I love getting up early, especially on the weekends. One of my favorite things to do is head to the beach before the crowds arrive, enjoy the morning air, watch the sunrise, and spend some time journaling.

Or sometimes, I’ll use that extra time to head to Publix and get my grocery shopping done. (Thank goodness for their 7 AM opening time!)

And the best part? By the time it’s noon, I’ve already had an entire morning to myself, and there’s still so much of the day left.

Of course, if you’re exhausted from the week, please get your sleep! The goal isn’t to sacrifice rest just to squeeze more activities into your day.

It’s simply to make the most of your mornings when you can.

4. Break Your Weekend Into Different Parts

Another way to make your weekend feel longer is to divide your days into different parts.

Instead of thinking of Saturday as one long day, think of it as three separate opportunities to do something you enjoy.

For example:

  • Saturday morning: Go grocery shopping, have breakfast, or spend some time outdoors.
  • Saturday afternoon: Head home, relax, read a book, go to an attraction, or take a nap.
  • Saturday evening: Get dressed up for dinner, watch a movie, or hang out with friends.

See what I mean?

You’re giving yourself different experiences throughout the day instead of letting the whole weekend blend together.

And you don’t have to schedule every single hour. Just having a general idea of how you’d like to spend your morning, afternoon, and evening can help.

5. Start Your Weekend on Friday

If you work a Monday through Friday schedule, start enjoying your weekend as soon as you finish work on Friday.

Instead of heading straight home and calling it a night, you can plan something fun to kick off the weekend.

You could grab dinner with friends, catch a movie, go for an evening walk, or order your favorite takeout and have a cozy night at home.

And if you’re completely exhausted after work, that’s okay too.

Sometimes the perfect Friday night is taking a long shower, changing into some pajamas, and scrolling on socials.

6. Practice the Sabbath and Enjoy a Day of Rest

One of my favorite things about the weekend, especially Sundays, is having an opportunity to slow down and rest.

If you practice the Sabbath, consider setting aside time to step away from your everyday responsibilities and focus on resting physically, mentally, and spiritually.

For me, that looks like going to church, spending time with God, enjoying time with loved ones, and simply taking a break from the busyness of the week.

7. Make Time for a Little Self Care

Another great way to enjoy your weekend is to make space for some much needed self care.

And I’m talking about the kind of self care that makes you feel refreshed and ready for a new week.

Maybe that’s washing and styling your hair, doing your nails, taking an everything shower, or working on a hobby.

8. Try Something New

If your weekends have started to feel like the same routine over and over again, switch things up.

You don’t have to travel somewhere far away or spend a ton of money to experience something new.

It could be as simple as visiting a new restaurant, exploring a new park, taking a fitness class, or doing a local activity.

9. Don’t Wait Until the Weekend to Have Fun

Another way to make your weekend feel longer, is to make the most of your weekdays instead of saving all the fun for Saturday and Sunday.

And I know this is easier said than done!!! Especially… after a long and tiring day at work or school. But hold on… hear me out for a second.

For certain days, instead of coming home, eating dinner, showering, and going to bed; try planning something.

Whether that’s Inviting a few people over for a game night, baking a sweet treat, or checking out a local event.

And you don’t have to do something every single day. Even planning one or two fun activities during the week can give you something to look forward to.

That way, you’re not relying on just two days to squeeze in all the fun.

10. Don’t Let Sunday Become All About Monday

Isn’t it funny how Sunday afternoon rolls around and suddenly your brain is already thinking about Monday?

The emails, the responsibilities, the things you need to get done. All of it.

And before you know it, you’re spending the second half of your Sunday preparing for a week that hasn’t even started yet.

Breath and don’t let the Sunday scaries intimidate you. Instead, try setting aside a small amount of time to prepare for Monday, whether that’s picking out your outfit, packing your lunch, or reviewing your schedule.

Once you’ve done that, give yourself the freedom to enjoy the rest of your day.
