Choose a Free or Low Cost Location

One of my top Friendsgiving ideas on a budget, is to choose a free or low cost location to host your Friendsgiving party.

This could be at your house, a friend’s house, or even at a local park so that you don’t have to spend extra money trying to secure a venue.

Set Up a Potluck Style Friendsgiving

Another area where you can save a lot of money is the food.

Thanksgiving season is practically synonymous with potlucks. So instead of taking on the full cost of providing all of the food yourself, set up your menu potluck style and invite your friends to bring a dish to share.

And if you want to spice up your potluck even more, you can add a theme to it.

For example, you could have everyone bring a dish that starts with the first letter of their name, bring their favorite appetizer, or even do a color themed potluck.

I can attest to themed potlucks being a hit, because it’s become the bread and butter of my Friendsgiving parties.

One year, everyone picked a letter and had to bring a dish that started with that letter. Another year, we did an around the world potluck where everyone chose a country and brought a dish inspired by that country.

Shop Around for Cheaper Groceries

If you’re planning to cook most of the party food yourself, another way to save money is to choose budget friendly meals that work well for a crowd. Some good options include mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, ham, and other easy sides.

To save even more money, I highly recommend shopping around for groceries. One grocery store might have cheaper meat, while another might offer better prices on produce, pantry items, or ingredients for your sides.

By comparing prices and being strategic about where you shop, you can bring the overall cost of your menu down.

Make Your Own Decorations

Another Friendsgiving idea is to make your own decorations. Plus, it’s an easy way to add some personal touches to the party.

For example, you can print out pictures of you and your friends, place them in picture frames, and use them to decorate your space.

You could also create your own framed art with a message like “Happy Friendsgiving” and place it on your table.

Or, if this is your fifth year celebrating Friendsgiving together, you could make a sign that says, “Welcome to our 5th Annual Friendsgiving 2026.”

Shop Around for Decorations

When it comes to decorations, another tip is to shop around before buying.

If you’re going with a specific Friendsgiving party theme, start by gathering some visual inspo and creating a mood board. This will help you figure out what kind of decorations you’re looking for before you start shopping.

And if you’re going for more of a simple party vibe, make a list of the decorations that you know you want. Such as balloons, flowers, or other fall themed decor.

Then, shop around at different stores and compare prices before deciding where to buy everything.

Play Games and Activities

Lastly, one of the easiest ways to add more fun to your party, without spending a lot of money is through games and activities.

There are so many free options you can do, whether that’s Thanksgiving trivia, minute to win it games, card games, or pulling out board games you already have at home.

You could also add a movie or show to your Friendsgiving plans, which is basically free if you already have a streaming service.

Another easy way to add to the atmosphere is by creating a customized Friendsgiving playlist and letting it play in the background throughout the party.
