17 Thanksgiving Party Ideas for a Stress Free Celebration in 2026
Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving with family, putting together a Friendsgiving with your friends, or planning something festive with coworkers, there are so many ways to make the holiday feel extra special. From planning the menu to decorating your space and adding a few activities, here are 26 Thanksgiving party ideas.

I’ve hosted Thanksgiving gatherings with my friends before, and one thing I’ve learned is that the more you can plan ahead, the easier it is to actually enjoy the party once everyone arrives.
These are some of my tried and true Thanksgiving hosting tips that help keep me sane, especially during the holiday season when there are already so many different parties and festivities happening.
Thanksgiving Party Ideas
1. Send Out Thanksgiving Invitations
When it comes to planning any party, sending an invitation is a must! So that everyone can know when and where the party is happening and what to expect.
And your Thanksgiving invitation can do a lot more than just share the date and time.
If you’re hosting a Thanksgiving potluck, add that to the invitation. And include a link within your message where everyone can sign up for what they’re bringing.
If you have a dress code, include that too. You can also add RSVP details to your invite, if you want your guest to RSVP beforehand.
Lastly, in the world of technology, you don’t have to send paper invitations. You can create a quick and easy digital invite and simply text or email it to your guests.
2. Focus on the Thanksgiving Tablescape
If you’re imagining your Thanksgiving party as more of a sit down dinner, put a little extra effort into your tablescape.
Start with a tablecloth or runner and add a few seasonal decorations like mini pumpkins, candles, fall flowers, or a garland running down the center of the table.
Then bring out your real plates, silverware, glasses, and cloth napkins if you have them.
3. Have a Casual Thanksgiving Party
On the other hand, maybe you don’t want a formal Thanksgiving dinner at all.
If your ideal Thanksgiving looks more like people sitting around the living room, standing in the kitchen, watching football, talking, and casually eating throughout the afternoon, embrace it.
Set the food out buffet style and let everyone serve themselves whenever they’re ready.
4. Use Disposable Plates and Utensils
If you’re having a casual Thanksgiving party, and don’t feel like ending the night with a sink overflowing with dishes; disposable plates and utensils are your best friend.
5. Make a Thanksgiving Charcuterie Board
If you need an easy Thanksgiving appetizer that guests can snack on, make a charcuterie board.
It’s a great option for guests to nibble on, without filling them up before the actual meal.
6. Serve Easy Appetizers
Speaking of keeping everyone fed while they wait, have a couple of easy appetizers ready.
You really don’t need anything elaborate here, especially when you already have an entire Thanksgiving dinner coming. (so just serve two or three appetizers and call it a day).
Here are some of my fav appetizer ideas:
- Pigs in a blanket
- Barbecue meatballs
- Spinach and artichoke dip with chips
- Sandwich sliders
7. Make Individual Charcuterie Cups
Love the charcuterie board idea but hosting a lot of people?
Make individual charcuterie cups instead.
Grab small cups and fill each one with a combination of crackers, cheese, cured meat, grapes, fruit, or anything else you would normally put on a charcuterie board.
Line the cups up on a table and everyone can grab their own.
Overall, it’s cute, easy to serve, and you don’t have to worry about a crowd of people reaching over the same charcuterie board all night.
8. Create Your Thanksgiving Menu
Before grocery shopping, sit down and actually write out your Thanksgiving menu.
This sounds incredibly basic, but it makes planning so much easier.
Write down your main dishes, sides, appetizers, desserts, and drinks.
Once everything is written down, you can create your grocery list based on the recipes you’re actually making; instead of walking through the grocery store trying to remember everything.
9. Have a Thanksgiving Potluck
If you’re looking for another way to set up your party menu, host potluck.
Ask everyone to bring a dish to share and coordinate beforehand, so you don’t accidentally end up with six pans of mac and cheese (loll).
You can also make your Thanksgiving potluck a little more creative by giving it a theme.
For example, you can ask everyone to bring a dish that starts with the first letter of their name. Or have a “sidesgiving” and invite everyone to bring a side dish (because let’s face it… the side dishes are often the stars on a Thanksgiving plate).

10. Create Signature Thanksgiving Drinks
The food might get most of the attention on Thanksgiving, but don’t forget about the drinks.
Create one or two signature fall drinks specifically for your party.
You could serve an apple cider punch, cranberry mocktail, sparkling apple cider, seasonal cocktail, flavored sparkling water, or a simple juice bar.
You can even give your signature drink a cute Thanksgiving inspired name.

11. Play Thanksgiving This or That
If you’re looking for an easy Thanksgiving party game that requires almost no setup, play Thanksgiving This or That.
Turkey or ham?
Pumpkin pie or apple pie?
Mashed potatoes or mac and cheese?
Black Friday shopping or staying home?
You can simply read the questions out loud and have everyone answer, or turn it into a movement game where one side of the room represents one answer and the opposite side represents the other.

12. Make Your Space Smell Like Fall
Decorations are great, but one of my favorite ways to make a home feel instantly cozy is through scent.
Burn a fall scented candle, use a seasonal wall plug in, or put a simmer pot on the stove; to greet your guests with a cozy fall scent.
13. Prep as Much as Possible Beforehand
Out of all these Thanksgiving party ideas, this might be the one that saves you the most stress.
Plan ahead.
Decide whether you’re cooking everything yourself, ordering part of the meal, catering, or hosting a potluck.
Then figure out what you can accomplish before your party.
Chop vegetables. Make your grocery list. Clean the house. Organize serving dishes. Double check your guest count.
Future you will be very thankful.
14. Prepare Desserts Beforehand
Speaking of preparation, another great thing that you can prepare beforehand, are desserts.
Pies, cookies, brownies, cheesecakes, and several other desserts can usually be made ahead of time.
And if you’re buying the desserts, pick everything up beforehand so there’s one less errand on the day of your party.
15. Set the Dinner Table the Night Before
Another easy thing you can knock off your party checklist early, is setting the table.
Lay out your tablecloth, plates, glasses, utensils, napkins, and decorations the night before.
You can also put out serving platters and bowls and add little sticky notes reminding yourself what food goes into each one.
The fewer tiny decisions you have to make on the day of the party, the better.
16. Have To Go Containers Ready
We already know Thanksgiving usually comes with leftovers.
So keep some food containers on hand. So that your guests can pack any leftovers that they want to take home.
17. Create an Organized Coat Area
If you live somewhere that gets cold around Thanksgiving, plan somewhere for everyone to put their coats.
Because there is always that point in the evening where somebody is asking, “Wait, where did my jacket go?”
Clear out part of a closet or set up an area near the door entrance, where everyone can put their coats and jackets.
