Cheap Graduation Party Ideas That Won’t Break The Bank
When it comes to graduation season, there are so many expenses that come along with it, whether you’re graduating from high school and dealing with all the senior costs like prom, cap and gown, and getting ready for college. Or you’re graduating from college and looking for a budget friendly way to celebrate. Cheap graduation party ideas can be a lifesaver, giving you inspiration for how to throw a celebration that doesn’t break the bank but still feels beautiful, fun, and aesthetic.

That’s exactly what this article is about! Giving you simple ideas that you can incorporate into your party, to save money while still creating a celebration that fits your style and budget.
Cheap Graduation Party Ideas
Create Your Own Graduation Party Invite
One of the best ways to save money on your graduation party, before it even starts, is with your invitations. A great option is to create your own invite using a free design platform like Canva.
From there, you can send it to your guests through text or email, or print them out to mail or hand deliver. And overall, since you’re doing everything yourself instead of going through a company, you’ll end up saving a lot of money in this area.
Go With a Graduation Party Theme
When it comes to cheap graduation party ideas, you might think it’s better to keep things super basic and low-key, and that’s totally fine if that’s your vibe. But don’t shy away from going with a fun and creative graduation party theme.
Plus, working with a theme can actually make decorating easier. You can pick a color scheme, go with themed decorations and posters online, and instantly bring your vision to life without spending a lot.
And honestly, you can fit any graduation party theme, to fit your budget. For example, a “One Smart Cookie” graduation party can be super affordable if you bake the cookies yourself or buy them in bulk from a store like Costco. Or for a “High School Musical” inspired party, you can stick to red decor and themed posters to tie everything together.
So don’t avoid a themed party just because you think it might be expensive. And if you want more ideas, check out the article linked below for a full list of graduation party themes.

Have Your Graduation Party at a Free Venue
One of the best ways to save money, especially if you’re looking for cheap graduation party ideas, is to host your party at a free venue. This could be your home, whether that’s your living room or backyard, or even a local park or the beach. If you don’t have enough space, you can also ask a friend or family member if you can host it at their home.

Budget Friendly Graduation Party Food Ideas
Moving on to the next big expense for any party, especially a graduation party, is the FOOD. A great way to save money is by serving dishes that can be made in large portions for a low cost. For example, a taco bar with different tortilla options, meats, shredded lettuce, and toppings is filling, interactive, and fun since guests can build their own tacos.
Other budget friendly options include making a big batch of mac and cheese, baked chicken drumsticks, or pasta dishes like lasagna or chicken alfredo. These meals are affordable, easy to make in bulk, and will keep your guests full and satisfied.

Have a Dessert Table
Another one of my favorite cheap graduation party ideas, is creating a dessert table using items from your grocery store’s bakery section. You can also do the same with your graduation cake. Many stores like Walmart or Publix allow you to order a custom cake with a simple design or message, or you can choose a premade cake and add an affordable graduation cake topper to personalize it a bit more.
Going back to the dessert table… one of the reasons I love this idea for a budget friendly graduation party, is because it instantly makes the whole setup feel more *extra* than it actually is. It helps satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth at the end of the meal, or you can even leave the desserts out throughout the party so guests can snack whenever they want. You can also turn it into a cute party favor moment by providing small bags so guests can take desserts home with them.
Overall, it’s an easy setup that looks great and will definitely have guests going back for seconds. For your dessert table, you can keep it as simple or as extensive as you want. You can include a mix of cookies, cupcakes, pastries, your graduation cake, candy, and anything else you’d like to add.
Use Picture Frames as Table Setting
One of my favorite parts about graduation parties is that they’re a celebration of YOU. And a simple way to reflect that, is by incorporating your pictures into the decor.
You can use picture frames that you already have or pick up affordable ones. Then print out regular photos, graduation pictures, or senior portraits and place them inside.
These frames can then be used as table centerpieces for your food table or guest seating areas. They’ll help fill empty table space while also adding a personal touch to your party decor. And the best part, is that you can find picture frames for almost any budget at places like Dollar Tree, Marshalls, Walmart, or Target.
Decorate With Cheap Fresh Flowers
Another great option for your graduation table centerpieces, is using flowers. Whether you’re going with fresh or faux; don’t shy away from fresh flowers just because you think they’ll be too expensive. There are several ways to keep costs low, like buying flowers in bulk or choosing more affordable options such as baby’s breath and roses.
Another helpful tip is to use smaller vases so you don’t need as many flowers to fill each one. This allows you to buy fewer stems while still making everything look full and pretty. For vases, you can shop at places like thrift stores, Dollar Tree, or Walmart to stay within budget.
Play “Who Knows the Graduate Best” Party Game
When it comes to games and activities for your graduation party; a “Who Knows the Grad Best” game is such a fun, easy, and may I add… CHEAP game to play.
The whole point of the game is to see how well your guests really know you. You, as the graduate, come up with different questions about your likes, dislikes, and preferences, and then your guests try to guess the answers to see who knows you best.
There are a few different ways to play. You can print out the questions and pass them out to each guest, or you can call out the questions verbally and have guests raise their hands quickly to answer. Either way, it turns into a fun and interactive moment during the party.
If you want a more detailed breakdown of how to set up and play this game, I’ve written an entire article on it, so check out the link below.
