Trying to figure out what to do for your birthday? Maybe you’re looking to go on a trip, spend the day relaxing, or maybe your ideal birthday involves good food, a few of your favorite people, and absolutely no complicated plans. Either way, I’ve got you covered.

What to do for your birthday

What to do for Your Birthday

  1. Go out for birthday brunch. If you love breakfast food, go to your favorite brunch spot. Invite a few friends or family members, order the pancakes or breakfast sandwich you’ve been craving, and start your birthday with a delicious meal.
  2. Plan a birthday dinner. There’s a reason this one’s a classic. Book dinner reservations and enjoy coming together over delicious food with your loved ones.
  3. Spend the day at the beach. Pack a towel, snacks, sunscreen, and something to read, then head to the beach. Stay for the sunset and grab dinner afterward if you want to make a whole day of it. Living in South Florida has made me appreciate how a beach day can feel like a full outing without much planning.
  4. Have a birthday picnic. Pick up sandwiches or pack a few of your favorite foods, then head to a park, the beach, or even your backyard. Bring flowers and a small cake if you want to make it feel extra special.
  5. Take yourself on a solo birthday date. If you want to spend your birthday alone, plan a date with yourself. Go to dinner, see a movie, visit a local attraction, or do whatever sounds fun to you.
  6. Go birthday shopping. Take your time walking through your favorite stores. Pick out a gift for yourself or just enjoy browsing. Honestly, walking through HomeGoods and Target to look at all the cute things counts as an activity to me.
  7. Have a self care day. Think about what your ideal self care day looks like and make it happen. Get your nails done, book a massage, grab a sweet treat, or stay in bed and watch movies. It’s your day.
  8. Collect birthday freebies. Lots of restaurants and stores offer free or discounted birthday treats through their rewards programs. Check your apps and emails to see what you can pick up. I did this for my birthday this year, and it was so fun seeing how much free food I could score.
  9. Take birthday pictures. Put on a cute outfit and take some birthday pictures. You can have a friend take them on your phone or book a photographer.
  10. Go to a concert or show. If an artist you love is performing around your birthday, get tickets.
  11. Take a birthday trip. Plan a weekend getaway or take a full week to explore somewhere new.
  12. Book a staycation. Get a hotel room nearby and enjoy a little getaway without traveling far. Spend the day by the pool, explore the area, or order food and relax in your room.
  13. Host a game night. Invite your friends over and pull out your favorite board games or card games. Add snacks and a birthday cake, and you’ve got an easy celebration everyone can join in on.
  14. Have a themed dinner party. Pick a theme and ask your friends to dress up for dinner. You could choose a color, a decade, or “I never get to wear this” so everyone finally has an excuse to wear that outfit sitting in their closet.
  15. Throw a potluck birthday party. Ask everyone to bring a dish, and enjoy a potluck birthday party. This is great if you’re looking for budget friendly birthday ideas.
  16. Try a new activity. Have you been wanting to take a pottery, cooking, or dance class? Your birthday is a fantastic opportunity to finally sign up.
  17. Visit a theme park. Spend your birthday going on rides, eating park snacks, and letting your inner child have some fun.
  18. Go to the movies. Pick a movie you’ve been wanting to see and enjoy it on the big screen.
  19. Eat your favorite dessert. Who says you only have to eat cake on your birthday? Get ice cream, cookies, donuts, or any of your fav sweet treat. And yes, you can still put a candle on it.
  20. Decorate your space. Put up a birthday banner, grab some balloons and flowers. And decorate your home as though your birthday is a holiday.
  21. Watch the sunrise or sunset. Find a spot with a pretty view and take a moment to enjoy it. Grab breakfast after the sunrise or pick up dinner to eat while the sun sets.
  22. Visit a local attraction. Think of a place nearby you’ve been meaning to visit but haven’t gotten around to yet. Your birthday is a good opportunity to finally go.
  23. Spend the day doing your favorite things. Make a list of things you love and fit as many as you can into one day. Maybe that’s getting coffee, walking by the water, shopping, and ending the night with your favorite meal. It’s your birthday itinerary, so make it as jam packed as you’d like.
  24. Order your favorite meal and have a cozy night in. Put on comfy clothes, order takeout, and watch a movie or show. If your birthday falls during a busy week, this is such a nice way to celebrate without adding more to your plate.
  25. Write a letter to your future self. Write about what life looks like right now, what you’re excited about, and what you hope to do before your next birthday. Save it and open it a year from now to see what’s changed.
  26. Make a birthday bucket list. Your birthday doesn’t have to be the only day you do something fun. Make a list of things you want to try before your next birthday, like visiting a new restaurant, taking a trip, or picking up a hobby.
  27. Do absolutely nothing. If you’ve been busy and all you want is a day to rest, take it. Sleep in, stay in bed, eat something good, and enjoy having no plans.
