Wondering what to bring to college? As an incoming freshman, moving into your dorm and packing for college can feel a little overwhelming. Whether you’re going to a college nearby or moving somewhere completely out of state, you might be wondering, “What exactly do I need to pack? Do I need to bring my own vacuum? What about a lamp? What size are the beds?”

Take a deep breath! Packing for college doesn’t have to be super stressful. This article breaks down some of the college essentials that you’ll most likely need for your dorm room and classes.

And remember, you don’t need everything on this list. Once you move into your dorm room, you can live there for a little while and figure out what other items you actually need. As someone who lived on campus for all four years of college, I learned that less is more, especially when you’re living in a shared space. You don’t want your dorm room to become too cluttered, and bringing less can also make the move-in process much easier.

What to Bring to College

College Bedding Essentials

Mattress Topper

As someone who lived in dorms throughout my entire college experience, one of the biggest things to bring to college is a mattress topper.

The mattresses in the dorms are often uncomfortable because they’re typically made with plastic and metal springs. So getting a mattress topper, will add a cushioning layer to the bed. Making it a little bit more comfortable and easier to sleep on.

There are so many different mattress toppers available at different price points and budgets. However, I can assure you that you don’t need a super expensive one. When I started college back in 2018, I purchased a $30 mattress topper from Walmart, and it lasted me for a good three years.

Bedding Sheets

Another bedding essential is bedsheets. Depending on your dorm bed size, whether it’s a twin or twin XL, make sure to get fitted sheets and bedding that properly fit your mattress. 

When it comes to getting a duvet or comforter, one thing I really loved was using a duvet insert with a duvet cover. This made washing my bedding much easier. Whenever it was time to do laundry, I could simply unzip the duvet cover, remove the duvet insert, and wash the cover separately.

If you don’t know what a duvet cover is, it’s essentially like a pillowcase for your duvet insert. The duvet insert is the thicker, comforter like piece of bedding that goes inside the cover.

Pillows

Another essential for your dorm bedding is pillows and pillow cases. And if you want to spruce up your bed even more, get some throw pillows also. 

Throw Blanket

Now that you have your bedding situation handled, I also recommend bringing a throw blanket. This is great, if you want to lounge in a common area and want to stay warm. Or if you have a friend coming over so they can use your blanket.

Dorm Desk Essentials 

Desk Lamp

When it comes to dorm desk essentials, a desk lamp is a must! 

It’s super helpful for late night studying and provides another source of lighting in your room besides the bright ceiling lights.

Vanity Mirror

If you want to do your makeup or skincare while sitting at your desk, bring a small vanity mirror.

This is also great if you’re sharing a communal bathroom. Because you can do your makeup in your room instead of having to use the bathroom mirror.

Extension Cord

Another essential to have in your dorm room is an extension cord, so you can plug in all of your technology and devices. 

College School Supplies

When it comes to the actual school supplies you’ll need for college, here are some basic items you’ll most likely use for your classes, taking notes, and studying.

• Backpack

• Pencils and pens

• Notebooks

• Post it notes

• Index cards

• Folders

• Calculator

• Highlighters

• USB drive

• Laptop

• Calendar planner

Everyday Dorm Living Essentials

Reusable Water Bottle

When it comes to what to bring to college, definitely add a reusable water bottle to your list. So that you can stay hydrated throughout the day, while going to and from classes.

Headphones

Another daily essential is a pair of headphones. They’re especially helpful when you’re in your dorm room and want to listen to music or watch a movie without disturbing your roommate. And for when you’re walking around campus.

Umbrella

Pack an umbrella so that you can always have it in your backpack, in case it randomly starts raining.

Brita Water Filter

If you don’t want to buy water bottles, add a water filter pitcher to your college packing list. 

I recommend a Brita water filter simply because that’s the one I used. And it was amazinggg!! The only thing I needed to do, was switch out the filter every few months. And I was able to use the same pitcher throughout my entire time at college.

Plates and Bowls

Bring some plastic plates or bowls to your dorm room so you have something to eat from. Whether you’re eating cereal, snacks, or leftovers, having a plate or bowl available is super convenient.

You can also bring disposable plates if that works better for you.

Utensils

Bringing some basic utensils, such as spoons and forks, is also helpful so you can eat in your room.

Cups & Mugs

Bring a cup and/or mugs so you have something to drink from. 

Microwave

A microwave is another item you may want to bring for your dorm room, depending on your college’s rules and which appliances are allowed.

However, reach out to your dorm office before purchasing one. Your dorm may already have a microwave in a common area for everyone to use. For example, I didn’t bring a microwave to college because we had a common area on my floor with one that everyone could use.

Mini Fridge

If your dorm room doesn’t come with a refrigerator, consider bringing a mini fridge. However, similar to the microwave, check with your dorm office first. To see whether your dorm room already comes with a refrigerator and if bringing a mini fridge is allowed.

Toiletries

• Shower cady

• Shampoo and conditioner

What to Bring to College Dorm

College Clothing Essentials

Steamer or Iron

When it comes to clothing essentials for college, bring a steamer or iron so you can remove wrinkles from your clothes.

Clothes Hangers

Another must-have is some clothes hangers. So you can hang your clothes in your closet and keep them organized.

Clothes

When it comes to what clothes to bring to college, it may be tempting to bring your entire closet. However, I recommend choosing a few pieces that you know you’ll actually wear.

You don’t have to bring all of your T-shirts. During your first week of school, you’ll likely receive plenty of freebies, including free T shirts that you can wear around campus.

Also, when it comes to clothes, I highly recommend bringing some dressier options in case you need to dress up for a career fair, presentation, event, or a party.

Shoes

For shoes, bring some sneakers, sandals, along with dressier shoes in case you’re attending an event or need to dress up.

You should also bring a pair of easy slip-on shoes. So that you can quickly put them on to go to the dining hall, walk around your dorm, or run a quick errand. 

Laundry basket

I highly recommend getting a laundry basket with wheels or a laundry bag with straps; so it’s easier to carry your clothes to the laundry room without straining yourself.

Shower Sandals

If your dorm has communal showers, bring a pair of shower sandals so your bare feet aren’t directly touching the shower floor.

Cleaning Supplies

• Multipurpose cleaning spray

• disinfecting wipes

• Air freshener or room spray

• Paper towels

• Broom/vacuum

• Dish soap and sponge

• Laundry detergent

Miscellaneous Items
