Why Is Thanksgiving Important?

If you look at the list of Thanksgiving Bible verses below, you’ll notice that many of them come from the book of Psalms. King David and the other psalmists understood how vital it is to give thanks to God. Also, Paul recognized that importance also and further extended that we need to also extend thanksgiving in community with one another. You can see this in how he starts off the letters to the different churches. For example: Philippians 1:3-6, 1 Corinthians 1:4, Colossians 1:3

Why is Thanksgiving important

For me personally, thanksgiving has helped shift my focus back to God and His unchanging character. Life is full of ups and downs, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by negativity and challenges. But when I take the time to thank God for His goodness; His love;  and His faithfulness; I’m reminded that He alone is worthy of praise.

We give thanks to God first and foremost for salvation. Salvation is a gift we could never earn or purchase. It is only given to us through His undeserved grace, made possible through Jesus Christ, who lived a sinless life and died for our sins.

Furthermore, Thanksgiving realigns my perspective, reminding me of God’s presence and power in every season. And more than that, thanksgiving is an act of worship. God calls us to worship Him (Exodus 20:3), and a grateful heart is one of the great ways that we can do that.

As you read through these Bible verses, I pray that you ask the Lord to speak to your heart; reveal the importance of gratitude and thanksgiving; and show you practical ways to live it out each day.
