Moving Out of Your College Dorm? Check Out These Tips First
As the spring semester comes to a close, and you’re getting ready to either graduate or move out for the summer; you’re probably starting to think about moving out of your college dorm. And honestly, it can feel a little overwhelming. But with a bit of planning, the whole process can be very smooth. And make the transition easier, whether you’re putting your things in storage or bringing them back home.

Moving into your dorm can be such a fun experience. From setting up your new space and putting on fresh bedsheets to decorating and getting settled in. But when it’s time to clean up and move out, it can feel a little daunting. Especially with final exams and all the last details of wrapping up a semester.
In this article, I’m sharing some of my personal tips that I used when moving out of my college dorm. I relied on these tips throughout my entire college experience, from freshman year all the way to senior year, and they helped me stay organized, keep my sanity, and make move-out so much easier.
Moving Out of College Dorm
Start Packing Early
One of the biggest tips I can give when it comes to moving out of your college dorm is to start packing and cleaning well in advance. This could look like packing a month before, a few weeks before, or even just a couple of days ahead of move-out day. So that when the day finally comes, everything is already organized and ready to go. All you have to do is grab your things and leave.
Packing ahead of time is also super important so that you don’t feel overwhelmed during final exam season. That way, in those last few weeks of school, your main focus can just be your exams.
And if you’re anything like me, by the time your finals are over, you’re completely exhausted. The last thing you want is to deal with packing up an entire room after hours of studying. So I highly recommend packing little by little ahead of time, so when move-out day comes, it’s quick, easy, and stress free.
Move Out In The Morning
You know the saying, the early bird gets the worm? The same idea applies to move-out day. Try to move out as early as possible, ideally in the morning. This way, you’ll have better access to things like moving carts and anything else you might need.
Plus, elevators are usually less busy earlier in the day. Which makes it so much easier to go up and down, without dealing with the chaos of everyone trying to move out at the same time.

Decide Where Your Things Are Going
Another important part of moving out of your dorm is figuring out where all your stuff is going. Are you bringing everything back home? Or are you putting things in storage? This decision will help guide what you need to prepare ahead of time.
If you’re using storage, you’ll want to contact a storage company early so you can reserve a unit and handle any payments in advance. If you’re bringing everything back home, make sure you have a car ready or a plan for how you’re going to pack and transport all your belongings.
This is also a great time to decide what you want to keep, donate, or throw away. In college, it’s easy to collect a lot of random things like T-shirts, decorations, and other items you may not really need anymore. Anything you don’t want can be donated, given away to other students, or trashed if it’s broken or unusable.
I still remember my freshman year during move out, I couldn’t believe how many things people were giving away, like microwaves and mini fridges. And instead of throwing them out, people would just tag them as free. So in the end, you really never know, one person’s trash can easily become another person’s treasure, and you might end up helping someone else out in the process.
Check Your Dorm’s Move-Out Rules
Another important college move out tip, is to check your school’s move-out rules. You’ll usually get an email through your housing portal, or even flyers with a checklist of what you need to do to properly move out of your room. This often includes things like cleaning, packing up all your belongings, and removing decorations carefully so you don’t peel paint or damage the walls, along with any other rules your dorm building requires.
Along with packing everything up, don’t forget to clean your room. It might feel a little unnecessary since it’s going to be professionally cleaned afterward. But taking the time to tidy up, helps make things easier for maintenance when they come in for the next student.
Lastly, take pictures of your room before you leave. This can be helpful just in case you need to dispute any possible damage charges later on. Having photos shows that you left the space clean, followed all the rules, and respected the room before moving out.
Figure Out Your Move Out Plan
Last but not least, figure out your move out plan, prior to the move out day. Are you moving out by yourself, or will your parents, friends, or someone else be helping you? Will you need to rent something like a U Haul? Or are you putting your things in storage and then flying back home? These are just a few questions to ask yourself so you can figure out what works best for your situation.
For me personally, I remember when I was moving out of my sophomore dorm, my mom came to help me. But during my junior year, I moved out by myself, so I had to make sure everything was ready ahead of time. Once my final exams were done, I was able to leave right away because everything was already packed and prepared since it was a one person job.
