Dorm Room Checklist: Everything You Actually Need for College

Moving into your college dorm can bring out so many different emotions. Whether you’re excited, a little nervous, or feeling overwhelmed; packing your life and preparing for a shared space can get stressful pretty fast. Whether you’re attending a nearby school, driving across state lines, or flying to campus, you’re probably looking for a dorm room checklist to answer the big question: “what do I actually need for my dorm room?”

Having lived in college dorms throughout my entire college experience, I’ve seen firsthand which items are absolute lifesavers and which ones just end up cluttering your space. Living in a dorm should feel cozy and enjoyable while remaining functional, organized, and budget friendly.

So without further ado, here is my ultimate dorm room checklist of the basic essentials you’ll actually need in your dorm room.

Dorm Room Checklist

Dorm Bedding Essentials

Dorm room mattresses are often a little uncomfortable since they’re usually made with plastic covers and metal springs. I definitely recommend prioritizing comfort when it comes to your bed, simply because you’re going to spend a lot of time there.

Whether you’re sleeping, studying, or just relaxing; you want to make your space as comfortable and cozy as possible. So here are some essential dorm bedding items that will add a soft cushioning layer to your bed:

  • Mattress Topper: A Twin XL mattress topper is great for adding a soft, cushioned layer to your bed.
  • Twin XL Sheet Sets: Double-check your college’s bed size, but most dorms use Twin XL beds, so bring Twin XL sheets that will fit properly.
  • Comforter or Lightweight Duvet: Bring a comforter or lightweight duvet so you stay warm at night. Pro Tip: Buying a duvet insert with a removable duvet cover makes laundry way easier!!! I did this for my dorm bed and the duvet basically acts like a “pillowcase” for your thick insert. So when it’s time to do laundry, all you have to do is remove the insert from the cover and just wash the duvet cover.
  • Pillows & Pillowcases: Get a pillow(s) and pillowcases, and feel free to add some decorative throw pillows for extra cuteness and coziness.
  • Throw Blanket: Perfect for cold nights or lounging at your desk while you study.

Desk & Study Essentials

  • Surge Protector: Bring a surge protector/extension cord so you can easily plug in your technology and necessities, like charging your phone and laptop or powering your lamp.
  • Desk Lamp: A desk lamp is essential when you want a softer light source in your room without turning on the bright ceiling lights. It’s also a lifesaver during late night study sessions when your roommate is sleeping.
  • Basic School Supplies: Bring supplies like notebooks, highlighters, paper, sticky notes, pens, a planner, and a backpack.

Cleaning Essentials

  • Disinfecting Wipes & All-Purpose Cleaner Spray: Essential for wiping down your bed mattress, desk, door handles, and counters during move-in and throughout the semester.
  • Vacuum or Broom & Dustpan: Keep a small vacuum or a broom on-hand so you can easily sweep up hair, crumbs, or dust from your floors during the week.
  • Bathroom Cleaning Products: If you have an in-room or suite style bathroom, I highly recommend bringing shower cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, a toilet brush, toilet paper, and hand soap so you can keep everything clean.
  • Laundry Basket or Bag: For dirty clothes, I recommend a laundry basket with wheels or a laundry bag with shoulder straps. This makes carrying your clothes to and from the laundry room much easier without straining your arms or back.
  • Laundry Detergent & Supplies: Don’t forget your basic laundry products, including detergent, fabric softener, and dryer sheets.

Clothing & Closet Essentials

  • Everyday Clothes: Pack comfortable everyday clothes for class, including jeans, jackets, sweaters, along with loungewear. Be sure to also bring a couple of dressier outfits for special campus events, interviews, or parties.
  • Shoes: Bring comfortable walking sneakers, especially if you’re attending a large campus where you’ll be walking a lot. Don’t forget shower flip-flops and a pair of slip-on shoes/sandals for quick trips to the dining hall or lounge area.
  • Clothing Hangers: Bring hangers for your closet space. Most dorm rooms also come with a dresser or drawers, so you can fold the rest of your clothes and store them there.
  • Steamer or Iron: A handheld steamer or iron is a lifesaver so you can quickly get rid of wrinkles.
  • Extra Storage Bins: If you need additional organization, consider bringing one or two small storage bins. Personal Tip: I highly recommend moving in and organizing your room first before buying a ton of storage containers. Once you see what fits, you can order additional bins for what you actually need.

Other Dorm Essentials

  • Small Fan: If you get hot easily, bring a small fan to keep near your bed.
  • Microwave: Check with your housing office before buying any major appliances, as some colleges don’t allow them or they’re already provided in common areas. If allowed, a microwave is super convenient for quickly reheating food in your room.
  • Mini Fridge: Similar to the microwave, check your dorm rules first. A mini fridge is essential if your room doesn’t come with one so you can keep water, drinks, snacks, and leftovers cold.
  • Wall Decorations: Bring items like string lights, posters, or photos to personalize your space and make your dorm feel like home.
  • Mirror: Whether it’s a small vanity mirror for your desk or a full length mirror, having one in your room makes checking your outfit before heading to class much easier.
  • Plates & Utensils: Pack a few microwavable plates, bowls, cups, and utensils. They’re great to have on hand for eating cereal, snacks, or leftovers in your room.
  • Umbrella: Keep an umbrella in your backpack or near the door. Campus weather can be unpredictable, and you don’t want to get caught in the rain while walking across campus.
  • Headphones: Headphones are one of the most important items on any dorm room checklist. Since you’re sharing a space with a roommate, having a good pair lets you study, watch movies, or listen to music without disturbing each other.
