45 Birthday Party Ideas Everyone Will be Copying This Year

When it comes to birthday party ideas, the options are seriously endless. From a dinner party at a restaurant to a hilarious costume party, I’ve rounded up 45 birthday party ideas that work for any budget, age, aesthetic, and overall vibe. So without further ado, let’s get started!

Birthday party ideas

Birthday Party Ideas

1. Cherry on Top Birthday Party

We’re starting off on a sweet note, with a cherry on top party theme. Like the name suggests, this theme is all about cherries and the color red. Decorate with red balloons, red flowers, red napkins, and anything that gives that sweet little pop of red.

You can ask your guests to wear red. Or you alone, can wear a red outfit and be the star of the show. For the food and drinks, add small cherry details. Like shirley temples, Dr.Pepper, cherry cupcakes, or even a cherry tomato salad.

2. Polka Dot Birthday Party

The idea behind this party theme is that you are “spotted” turning your new age. It is so simple but so cute.

Wear a polka dot outfit as the birthday girl and if you’d like, you can also invite your guests to wear polka dots too. For decorations, use polka dot balloons and a banner with your age on it. You can even set up a small photo area with a polka dot backdrop.

3. Glow in the Dark Party

Can we talk about how glow in the dark parties will forever be elite? It’s such a simple party idea, that’s creative and chaotic in the best way possible.

The key to this theme is all about the lighting (or better yet, lack of lighting). Turn the lights down low, bring in black lights if you can, and load up on lots of glow elements. Like glow sticks, necklaces, bracelets, glasses, the whole nine yards. You can also add neon streamers, LED lights, and balloons to really make everything pop.

Encourage your guests to wear white or neon so they can glow also. You can even set up a face paint station, with glow in the dark face paint. So everyone can decorate their faces and fully lean into the theme.

4. Denim and Pearls Party

Denim and pearls is such a cute and classy theme. It gives a little bit of southern charm and y2k, especially with all of the denim. Ask your guests to wear denim outfits and pearls. And decorate your space with light blue and white colors to complement all of the denim.

5. Blooming Into (age)

This is one of my favorite birthday party ideas because it revolves around one of my favorite things. (cue jazz hands) flowers!

To lean into the floral look, decorate with fresh and/or faux flowers. Set up a flower bouquet making station. For the station, purchase different types of flowers and set everything up so that guests can create their own bouquets.

Since flowers can be a little pricey, (okay, very pricey) shop around at local flower shops or check out wholesale stores like Costco or Sam’s Club.

6. Birthday Tea Party

If you love the concept of a tea party, use it as your birthday theme. There are so many ways that you can plan this.

You can host a brunch tea party and serve tea alongside pastries and small breakfast appetizers. You could also plan a backyard tea party by setting a table outside with a nice tablecloth.

Another fun option is a picnic tea party. My friend did this for her 23rd birthday and it was such a cute idea. We hosted it in the backyard and she set up a low picnic table with floor pillows. She decorated the table with all the tea essentials like teacups, finger sandwiches, and a variety of desserts, which really brought the whole theme to life.

7. Cake Decorating Party

For a cake decorating party, bake some small cakes or cupcakes ahead of time. Then gather all of the toppings and supplies you and your friends will need to decorate them. Such as icing, piping bags, spatulas, and lots of sprinkles.

8. Birthday Pool Party

If you have a summer birthday and access to a pool, host a birthday pool party.

9. Bow Party Theme

Bows were such a big trend in 2025, and I still think they make a super cute decoration theme. Use ribbons to make bows and tie them around balloons, your birthday cake, and even add bows to your hair.

10. Birthday Dinner Party

Book a reservation at a restaurant and host your birthday dinner there. With this birthday party idea, you don’t have to worry about hosting at home, decorating your space, cleaning up afterward, or preparing the food because the restaurant takes care of it all for you.

Trendy Birthday Party Ideas

11. Cafe at Home Party

When it comes to trendy birthday party ideas, a café at home theme has been circulating a lot in 2026. And the concept is to turn your space into a mini café.

Create a menu that includes classic café items like bagels, different pastries, coffee, and tea. And of course, you have to play coffee shop music in the background, like slow jazz, and just enjoy the cozy café vibes.

12. Pancakes and Pajamas

Pajamas are not just for bedtime, and I’m always reminded of that whenever I go to a pajama party. A cute alliteration that you can add to your party, is pancakes and pajamas.

You can host this party in the morning and make it a breakfast style get together. Host it at night for a breakfast for dinner setup. Or combine the two by having a sleepover and, in the morning, make pancakes together with your guests.

13. Pasta and Pajamas

Another cute theme for a pajama party is Pasta and Pajamas. You can order takeout from a local restaurant, or make the pasta dishes at home.

Another twist on this party theme, is to turn it into a pasta making party. Although I’ve never made pasta from scratch myself; I’ve heard many people talk about how easy it is. Requiring simple ingredients you probably already have on hand, like eggs and flour.

So if you’re thinking about hosting a DIY pasta making night, don’t shy away just because it sounds difficult. Look up a few recipes online, follow the steps, and have fun with it. At the end of the day, this is your party. Laugh, chat, get your hands a little messy, and fill up on some delicious homemade pasta.

14. Paint and Sip Party

For a paint and sip party, set up a table with a tablecloth, canvases to paint, paint palettes, brushes, and of course some refreshments, so you and your friends can sip while you paint.

My favorite part about a paint and sip is that you have plenty of options when it comes to what to paint. You can choose pre-drawn canvases, paint by number kits, have everyone follow the same painting tutorial, or let everyone freestyle and create their own design.

If you want more details on how to plan a paint and sip party, check out the article linked below.

15. Tacky Tourist Costume Party

When it comes to trendy birthday party ideas, I’m a sucker for funny themes, and a tacky tourist party is exactly that. This theme works for any birth month, but especially if your birthday is in the summer, since that season is usually filled with travel and touristy vibes.

Invite your guests to dress up in “stereotypical tourist” outfits that are hilarious and super tacky. Think socks with sandals, oversized sunglasses, fanny packs, cameras around their necks, and even bringing a suitcase as a prop.

Furthermore, decorate your space to look like a popular tourist destination such as: NYC, Paris, Miami, or even a safari theme.

16. Dress Up Like You’re Going to the Wrong Event Party

Another funny birthday party theme is a “dress up like you’re going to the wrong event” party. Since it’s a birthday party, invite your guests to show up dressed as if they’re attending a completely different event.

They could come dressed for a graduation ceremony in a cap and gown, show up like they’re headed to the Grammys in a ball gown, or dress like they’re going to a sports game in a jersey.

The key is to encourage everyone to have fun and get creative with their outfits. Because honestly, that’s where most of the fun comes from, seeing what everyone decides to wear.

17. Rhyme Without Reason Costume Party

Since we’re on the topic of funny party themes, I have to include a rhyme without reason costume party. With this theme, have your guests pair up and dress as two things that rhyme but are completely different and make no sense together.

For example, one pair could dress up as FBI and butterfly, dental floss and Bob Ross, or burrito and superhero. To encourage your guests to get creative with their outfits, host a costume contest and award a prize to the pair with the best or funniest look.

18. Berry Sweet Birthday Party

A berry sweet birthday party is inspired by strawberries. So decorate your space with red and strawberry themed decorations. If you want to go beyond just strawberries, you can also incorporate other berries into your decor/menu.

In really bringing this theme to life, include strawberry foods within your menu. Such as strawberry lemonade, strawberry shortcake, or even a strawberry salsa.

17. Locally Grown Since (Age)

A locally grown birthday party is inspired by a farmers market theme. Decorate your space with farmers market inspired details like plaid tablecloths, rustic signs, wooden crates, and baskets. You can also set out plenty of fresh fruit and veggie platters to really bring the theme to life.

18. Taco Bout a Birthday Party

Taco bout a birthday with a party themed all around tacos. This is such a great idea if you love tacos and are looking for a creative and out of the box theme.

Set up a DIY taco bar with different tortillas, meats, and toppings. Not only does this cover your food menu, but it also creates an interactive experience where guests can build their own tacos and have fun customizing it to their liking .

To match the taco theme, decorate with colorful decorations so it feels like a fun fiesta. And of course, you have to include a piñata. Along with candy, you can fill it with extras like money, stickers, pens, and even gift cards to make it even more exciting.

Birthday Party Ideas at home

19. Backyard BBQ

When it comes to birthday party ideas at home, a backyard barbecue is usually the first thing that comes to mind. It is classic, fun, and you can make it as casual or as elaborate as you’d like.

If you want something super casual, you can stick with burgers and hot dogs. If you want to turn up the heat, you can add ribs, chicken, and different barbecue sides to the menu.

20. Chapter (age)

A chapter themed birthday party, leans into the idea of books. So decorate with books and themed props, to highlight the new chapter and age you are stepping into.

21. Butter With Age/Churning (Insert Age)

I recently saw a post where someone hosted a butter themed party, and I thought it was such a clever pun. The theme leans into butter and the color yellow.

So you can decorate with yellow flowers, yellow tablecloths, and include yellow themed desserts like a yellow birthday cake. Lastly, as the birthday girl, I’d highly recommend wearing a yellow dress to really tie the theme together.

22. Favorite Things Birthday Party

A “favorite things birthday party” is all about celebrating everything you love. For the menu, serve some of your favorite foods. You can also get creative with the drinks. Whether you’re an iced coffee girlie, a matcha lover, or obsessed with Diet Coke, include your favorite drink on the party menu.

You can also make a party playlist with your favorite song. And even create a trivia game to see who knows you best and can guess all your favorite things.

23. Game Night Party

Bring out the cards, board games, or even DIY games and host a game night for your birthday. This is perfect if you want something chill and low-key that doesn’t require a lot of decorations or complicated food. Keep the menu simple with pizza, chips, or wings, and enjoy a fun hangout with your loved ones.

24. Sunset Birthday Party

For a sunset birthday party, decorate your backyard with sunset colors like orange and fuchsia. And host the party in the late afternoon so it naturally leads into the sunset.

25. Floral Garden Party

Another backyard party idea is a floral garden party. Decorate your outdoor space with lots of flowers, and take inspiration from the existing greenery, grass, and trees within your backyard.

You can also set up a DIY flower bouquet station and fully embrace the whimsical floral aesthetic. Furthermore, encourage your guests to wear flower themed outfits to complete the look.

26. Party Based on Your Favorite Color

Whether your favorite color is purple, green, pink, rose gold, or anything else, embrace that color theme and decorate your party around it.

Birthday Party Ideas for adults

27. Kissing My (Decade) Goodbye

A “Kissing My (Decade) Goodbye” party is one of my favorite unique birthday party ideas for adults. Whether you’re saying goodbye to your teens, 20s, 30s, or any other decade, this theme is a fun way to celebrate. Decorate with lip themed decorations to highlight the concept and bring the theme to life.

28. Aged to Perfection

For an “Aged to Perfection” birthday party, take inspiration from wine and cheese to guide your menu. Decorate with deep red colors to really tie in the wine theme and create a “sophisticated” vibe.

29. Hotel/Airbnb Slumber Party

Put a grown-up spin on a slumber party by hosting it at a hotel or Airbnb. You can enjoy all the cozy comforts without the cleanup, and it’s a fun way to make your birthday feel like a mini getaway with your friends. Add some snacks, movies, and comfy pajamas to complete the cozy theme.

30. Dress Up Like the Birthday Person

If you’re using this list of birthday party ideas to plan a surprise party for someone, this is a funny costume party idea. If the birthday person has an iconic look or style, invite everyone to dress up like them.

You can also take inspiration from the past few years of the person’s life. Like pictures you have of them and outfits they’ve worn, and everyone can recreate those outfits and looks.

31. 90s Theme Party

If you’re a 90s baby, feeling nostalgic, or just love the iconic looks and aesthetic of the 90s, throw a 90s themed party. Decorate with 90s themed decorations, and most importantly, invite your guests to dress up in 90s inspired outfits.

32. 2000s Party

Take it back to the 2000s with a 2000s themed party. As a 2000s baby myself, this is one theme I would absolutely love to recreate one day because it’s just so cute and there are so many different aesthetics you can pull from.

You could go with a hip hop theme, a pop culture look, or even lean into full 2000s childhood nostalgia. But the most important part of this party, like any decade themed party, is the outfits. Let your friends know it’s a 2000s party ahead of time so they can show up on theme.

33. 80s Prom

Another popular decade for a birthday party is the 80s. Think bold and colorful outfits, big hair, and all the extra vibes. You can totally do a regular 80s themed party, but a more out of the box twist on this idea is hosting an 80s prom party.

Invite your guests to dress like they’re heading to prom in the 80s. Hit up the thrift store and look for dresses with shoulder pads, go all in on dramatic hair, and don’t be shy with bright and colorful makeup.

Decorate your space to feel like a prom scene, add a DIY photo area, and of course play a fire 80s playlist to really set the mood.

33. 21st Birthday Party Ideas

When it comes to popular birthday searches, 21st birthday party ideas are almost always in the top 10. And there are so many fun ways to celebrate turning 21. From a Roaring 20s themed party to a “Freshly 21” lemonade inspired celebration, the options are endless.

When it comes to 30th birthday ideas, there are just as many fun options as there are for a 21st. You could host a 13 Going on 30 themed party, throw a Roaring 30s celebration, or plan a Chapter 30 party to mark the start of this new season.
