Clothes to Pack for College
When packing clothes for college, it may be tempting to pack and bring your entire closet. But I want you to pause and focus on bringing pieces that you will actually wear and that work for the climate where you will be attending school.
For example, I went to Florida International University in Miami, where the weather is basically hot all year round. Because of this, most, if not all, of my clothes consisted of T shirts and casual everyday outfits. However, if you’re going to a college where you experience all four seasons, your clothing needs will look different.
If you move in during the fall, you may want to bring some of your summer clothes along with early fall pieces, such as sweaters and boots. Then, if you plan on going back home during Thanksgiving break, you can use that as an opportunity to grab some of your heavier winter clothes.
However, if you’re not planning on going back home for Thanksgiving break or you simply want to bring everything at once; you can pack all of your seasonal clothes at the beginning of the school year.
If you do this, I recommend packing your winter clothes in vacuum sealed bags. This will help them take up less space while packing and in your dorm room. Once you’re ready to bring out your winter clothes, you can take them out of the vacuum sealed bags and rotate your seasonal clothes.
- T shirts
- Long sleeve shirts
- Jeans
- Pants
- Shorts
- Leggings
- Sweatpants
- Sweaters
- Jackets
- Underwear
- Bras
- Socks
- Pajamas
- Workout clothes
- Swimsuit
- Dressier outfit
- Business casual outfit
- Sneakers
- Sandals
- Boots
- Dress shoes
- Sunglasses

College Laundry Supplies
While in college, you will be doing your own laundry, so make sure to bring some laundry essentials to help you get the job done.
In addition to the products listed below, I highly recommend getting a laundry basket with wheels or a laundry bag with straps. This will make it easier to carry your clothes to the laundry room without having to strain yourself.
- Laundry detergent
- Fabric softener
- Dryer sheets or wool dryer balls
- Stain remover
- Laundry basket or Laundry bag
