If you’re planning a party and looking for potluck theme ideas, I’ve got you covered! Whether you’re hosting a Friendsgiving party, a casual hangout with friends, or any celebration where you’re inviting everyone to bring a dish; here are 25 potluck themes to spice up the menu.

Potluck theme ideas

Potluck Theme Ideas

1. First Letter of Your Name Potluck

First up on our list of potluck theme ideas, is a “first letter of your name potluck”. Where your guests bring a dish that starts with the same letter as their first name.

For example, Nicole could bring nachos, Sandy could bring sweet potato pie, Becky could bring barbecue chicken, and so on.

2. Alphabet Letter Potluck

For an alphabet letter potluck, there are two ways that you can set it up.

The first option is to use a random letter generator and have each guest randomly pick a letter. Whatever letter they get, they have to bring a dish that starts with that letter.

The second option is for you, as the host, to choose one letter for the entire party. Everyone then has to bring a dish that begins with that letter.

For example, if you choose the letter “B”, guests could bring things like banana bread, bruschetta, brownies, buffalo chicken wings, etc.

3. Color Themed Potluck

With a color themed potluck, each guest chooses a color. And they have to bring a dish that matches that color and wear an outfit in the chosen color.

For example, if I choose the color red, I could bring a red velvet cake. If someone chooses green, they could bring collard greens or a green salad. If someone chooses brown, they could bring fried chicken wings or brownies, just to name a few.

4. One Color Potluck

Another option based on a color themed potluck, is for you, as the host, to choose the color and have everyone bring a dish based on the color that you chose.

So if you choose the color yellow, everyone has to bring a dish that is yellow or comes in yellow packaging.

5. Taco Bar Potluck

If you love tacos or you’re doing a taco Tuesday themed party, consider hosting a taco bar potluck. In which everyone brings an ingredient or component to contribute to the overall taco bar station.

For example, one person can bring the salsa, another person can bring the corn tortillas, someone else can bring the chicken, and another person can bring the ground beef.

By having everyone bring different components, you can create a taco station with a variety of toppings and options; where everyone can build and customize their own tacos.

6. Salad Themed Potluck

I saw someone do a salad themed potluck online, and I thought it was such an interesting and unique take on salads.

For your potluck party, encourage your guests to think outside the box and explore all the different possibilities of what can be considered a “salad.” Such as a seafood boil, candy salad, pasta salad, or potato salad.

7. Appetizers Only Potluck

With an “appetizers only themed potluck”, invite everyone to bring only appetizers. Things like spinach dip, boneless wings, flatbread pizza, or other bite sized snacks are all great ideas.

8. Dip Themed Potluck

If you’re hosting a girls night and you’re looking for a potluck theme that’s casual and on brand with a “girl dinner”, consider a “dip themed potluck”. Where you and your friends bring your favorite dip.

It can be anything like rotel dip, chocolate fruit dip, queso dip, hummus and pita bread, or guacamole and chips.

9. Bring a Board Potluck

Another one of my favorite potluck theme ideas, is a “bring a board themed potluck”; which is all about charcuterie boards.

In addition to your classic cheese, crackers, and cured meat board; encourage your guests to think outside the box and get creative with what they can put on a charcuterie board.

For example, you can do a taco, breakfast, or a candy themed board. Honestly, the only rule for this potluck is that the food has to be displayed on a charcuterie board.

10. Main Ingredient Themed Potluck

As the host, choose a main ingredient for your potluck and invite your guests to bring dishes that contain that ingredient. (It can be any ingredient, fruit, or vegetable).

For example, if you choose strawberries as your ingredient, guests can bring dishes like strawberry lemonade, strawberry and spinach salad, strawberry salsa with salmon, or a strawberry cake.

11. Childhood Favorites Potluck

Take a trip down memory lane with a “childhood favorites themed potluck”, where everyone brings their favorite foods from their childhood.

This could be anything from chicken tenders, mac and cheese, sloppy joes. To CapriSun juice pouches or something out of the blue like ant logs or dirt cups.

12. Your Favorite Food Potluck

With this potluck theme, invite your guests to bring their current favorite food and/or drink, that they could enjoy day after day without ever getting tired of it.

You know those dishes that feel like pure comfort and taste just as good every single time? It could be anything from burgers to iced coffee to vodka pasta or any other go-to favorite.

13. Taste of Home Potluck

If you’re hosting a potluck with people from different cultural backgrounds, a “taste of home themed potluck” is a great idea.

Invite each guest to bring a dish that’s connected to their upbringing, family, or cultural background.

My friends and I did this one time, and it was both really fun and delicious. As someone with a Haitian background, I brought diri djon djon, a popular Haitian black mushroom rice. My Trinidadian friend brought curry chicken, and my African American friend brought collard greens.

Overall, it was such a fun way to learn more about each other’s cultures while enjoying some amazing homemade food.

14. Brunch Potluck

When it comes to hosting a potluck, if you’re planning a morning or early afternoon celebration, a brunch themed potluck is the perfect choice.

Invite everyone to bring their favorite brunch dishes, whether it’s shrimp & grits, breakfast casseroles, fruit salad, pastries, quiche, or any other delicious brunch favorite.

15. Summer Potluck

With the sun shining and outdoor parties and barbecues in full swing, summer is the perfect time to host a summer potluck.

Whether you’re celebrating the Fourth of July or simply looking for a fun gathering during the summer months, invite everyone to bring their favorite summer themed foods.

For example, if you’re hosting a barbecue, ask your friends to bring barbecue side dishes, meats for the grill, or classic summer favorites.

You could also host a summer themed dinner party potluck, where everyone brings a summer inspired recipe to share.

16. Thanksgiving Potluck

Whenever I hear the word “potluck”, one of the first celebrations that comes to mind is Thanksgiving. Because it’s a time when we come together to celebrate the holiday season, share delicious food, and enjoy the spirit of togetherness.

If you’re looking for the perfect time to host a potluck, Thanksgiving is a great choice. Whether you’re planning a traditional Thanksgiving gathering or a Friendsgiving party, invite everyone to bring a favorite holiday dish to share and enjoy together.

17. Food From a Show or Movie Potluck

When it comes to themed potluck ideas, a super creative theme is to ask your guest to bring a dish inspired by a show or movie. For example:

  • Chocolate chips cookies (The Incredibles)
  • Spaghetti & meatballs (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs)
  • Dumplings (Kung Fu Panda)
  • Loaded baked potatoes (Toy Story)
  • Chocolate cake (Matilda)
  • Dino nuggets, mashed potatoes, gravy, and broccoli (Jurassic World)

18. Italian Themed Potluck

Host a potluck inspired by a particular cuisine, like an Italian themed potluck where guests bring different Italian inspired dishes.

You can also choose a different cuisine theme, such as Mexican, American, or Greek, just to name a few.

19. Around the World Potluck

With an “around the world potluck”, the overall idea is to celebrate and explore different cultures and cuisines. Even if your guests are not from different cultural backgrounds, this is a great way to research a particular country and recreate a dish inspired by it.

My friends and I did this as our Friendsgiving party theme one year, and we had a blast!

Not only did we have the potluck party, but beforehand; we were encouraged to research the country we chose, learn different facts about it, and explore the culture surrounding it.

For the actual Friendsgiving celebration, we dressed up in outfits inspired by our chosen country and brought a dish inspired by that country as well.

If you’re interested in recreating an Around the World themed potluck, check out THIS article where I break down some of the things we did at our party.

20. Around America Themed Potluck

With an “around America themed potluck”, have your guests choose a particular state within the U.S. and bring a popular dish from that state.

For example, if someone chose Florida, they could bring something like Key lime pie, Cuban sandwiches, or a Publix sub. Someone choosing New York could bring classic foods like pizza, hot dogs, or bagels with cream cheese.

21. Pasta Potluck

If you and your friends love pasta, then host a pasta potluck where everyone brings a pasta dish to share.

22. Fast Food Potluck

The basis of this potluck is fast food, so have everyone bring items from their favorite fast food restaurant to share.

This could be anything from Chick-fil-A nuggets, In-N-Out burgers, Chipotle chips and guac, or even Taco Bell tacos.

23. Mystery Potluck

With a mystery potluck, the “mystery” comes from the fact that no one communicates about what they are bringing to the party.

With a traditional potluck, you usually have a sign up sheet or some way for everyone to communicate what they plan on bringing, but with this party theme, everyone keeps their dish a surprise.

Because no one knows what anyone else is bringing, you may end up with duplicates or a fun mix of unexpected dishes.

24. Small Bites Potluck

With a small bites potluck, have your guests bring dishes that come in smaller portions. Instead of full sized meals, everyone brings bite sized versions of the dish to share.

For example, instead of burgers, you can bring burger sliders. Other ideas could include mini sandwiches, chicken skewers, small desserts, or any other bite sized dishes.

25. Restaurant Takeout Potluck

Similar to the fast food potluck theme, a “restaurant takeout potluck” is all about ordering from your favorite restaurant and bringing a dish to share.

This could be your favorite pasta from an Italian restaurant, a favorite appetizer from a local spot, or any other takeout dish you love.
