Calling all 2000s babies! We’re officially making our way through our mid twenties. (Whoop whooop!) And if you’re looking for 26th birthday ideas, you’ve landed on the right page.

26th birthday ideas

At the time of writing this article, I’m less than a month away from turning 26 years old. And honestly, I’m super excited because I’m slowly starting to transition from feeling “adult-ish” to feeling like a full-on “adult adult.” It’s such a weird but exciting stage of life.

Whether you’re looking for 26th birthday party ideas, wanting to spend your birthday alone, searching for fun things to do, or you simply don’t want to do much at all; I’ve put together a list of birthday ideas to help you celebrate your 26th birthday.

26th Birthday Ideas

1. Have a Self Care Day

Starting off this list of 26th birthday ideas, is having a self care day. And honestly, this can look like so many different things, depending on what you like to do for self care.

You can use this as an opportunity to go to the nail salon and get your nails done, book a massage, or plan an at home self care day. You could even go on a long walk, especially if being out in nature helps you decompress and clear your mind.

The goal is to create the ultimate self care day!! That’s all about rejuvenating yourself and feeling pampered.

2. Eat Your Favorite Dessert

If you love cake, celebrate your birthday with cake. And if it’s not your thing, celebrate with your favorite dessert instead. This could be ice cream, doughnuts, froyo, cookies, or anything you love most.

If you don’t have a sweet tooth, you can still join in the fun, by putting candles on your favorite food. I’ve seen people get really creative with this, like adding birthday candles to sushi, pancakes, and even pizza.

3. Grab Birthday Freebies

One thing I’m definitely looking forward to, during my birthday week, is snagging some birthday freebies. I did this a few years ago when I turned 23 and it was such a fun experience. I couldn’t believe how many free items and discounts I got just for being a rewards member at some of my favorite restaurants.

If you’ve never heard of birthday freebies, they’re basically birthday rewards that many restaurants and retailers offer to people who sign up for their free loyalty programs or email lists, as a way of saying thank you and happy birthday.

From buy one get one free sandwiches to a free drink at Starbucks or even a free stack of pancakes at IHOP, there are so many options out there. If you’re interested in a full list of places that offer birthday freebies, check out the article linked below.

4. Do Your Favorite Things

A really cute way to look at your birthday, especially your 26th, is to treat it like a “me day” and use it to do some of your favorite things.

You can create a jam packed itinerary of everything you’d love to do that day. This could be anything from waking up early to watch the sunrise, going out for breakfast, visiting a bookstore, and grabbing lunch at your favorite restaurant.

5. Do Nothing

One of the things I often wrestle with when it comes to birthday ideas, is the feeling that you have to do something just because it’s your birthday.

If you don’t feel like doing anything, then simply do nothing. Go about your normal routine, and enjoy the day without the societal pressure of needing to host a party or make the day feel “extra” in order to make it meaningful.

6. Go out for Dinner

A classic way to celebrate your birthday, is to go out for dinner. You can go with friends, family, or even enjoy a solo dinner date.

7. Have a 26th Birthday Slumber Party

The older I get, the more I want to do nostalgic childhood things that let out my inner child, and a slumber party definitely does that.

If you’re looking for a cozy party idea that’s not too over the top, something super low key and perfect for a girls night in, then a slumber party is it.

Invite your friends to come in pajamas and plan a night filled with fun activities like watching a romcom, baking cookies, eating pizza, and having girl talk. You can even set up a build your own ice cream sundae station and just enjoy a cozy night in with your girls.

8. Let Out Your Inner Child

Speaking of letting out our inner child, if you’ve been wanting to do fun activities that bring that energy out, your birthday is the perfect time to do it.

It could be anything like going to an amusement park; visiting an arcade; going roller skating; or even hosting a field day party, where you play backyard games and set up little tournaments.

9. Go on a 26th Birthday Trip

Going on a trip is another fantastic birthday idea, and it can be anything from a weekend getaway to a week long trip. You could visit a nearby city, explore a new state, or even do something like booking a cruise.

10. Take 26th Birthday Pictures

Another one of my fav 26th birthday ideas on this list, is taking birthday pictures. I love this idea so much that I want to turn it into a tradition this year. Simply because as I get older, I love looking back at photos and that sentimental feeling of seeing how I’ve grown over the years, both physically and emotionally.

If you feel the same way, I would highly recommend taking some pictures. And honestly, they don’t even have to be anything super fancy. You can get dressed up and take photos on your phone, ask a friend to take pictures of you, or you can book a photographer or go to a photo studio.

11. Visit an Attraction

If you’re wanting to do some exploring on your birthday, look for nearby attractions and plan a visit. It could be anything from a museum, zoo, or aquarium, and spend the day learning new things and exploring the attraction.

12. Live Entertainment Experience

Another thing you can do for your 26th birthday is go to a concert, watch a play, attend a comedy show, or even go to a sports game.

13. Have a Game night

Invite your friends over and have a game night for your birthday. This is a great idea if you’re looking for something super casual or even a last minute birthday plan.

A game night is so easy to put together, because if you already have board games or card games at home, you’re pretty much set. You can also create your own games, like trivia or competition style challenges.

14. Go to the Movie Theater

There’s something about being in a movie theater, watching a film on the big screen, and hearing the ultra HD sound that feels so immersive, like you’re in a whole different world.

If there’s a movie coming out around your birthday that you’re interested in, go to the theater and watch it on the big screen.

16. Butter With Age Party Theme

If you’re looking for a cute pun for your birthday party, consider a “butter with age” theme. As the name suggests, it’s inspired by butter and the color yellow.

Decorate with light yellow decor, add a sign or poster that says “butter with age” or “churning 26” to tie everything together, and of course, incorporate butter into the party menu.

For example, you could serve butter and bread as an appetizer. Or if you want something a bit more “fancier”, you can make honey butter croissants. This can be as simple as picking up croissants from the bakery section of the store and making a honey butter mixture by melting honey into butter, then brushing it over the croissants and lightly baking them.

17. Potluck Birthday Party

I love hosting potluck parties, because you don’t have to worry about providing all the food yourself. It’s a great way to try everyone’s favorite dishes, and it creates a really communal style of eating where everyone brings something to share.

If you’re looking for a birthday party theme where you don’t have to stress too much about the menu or what to feed your guests, then host a potluck birthday party. You can keep it simple with a general potluck where everyone brings a dish, or if you want to spice things up a bit, you can add a fun theme.

For example, you could have guests bring a dish that starts with the first letter of their name. Bring a dish from their culture. Wear a color and bring a food that matches that color. Or even have everyone bring their favorite snacks and comfort foods so you can all enjoy a cozy night of eating and hanging out together.

18. Say Cheese Party Theme

You know how when we’re taking pictures we’re often told to say “cheeeese”? That’s exactly what this party theme is about.

So include cheese inspired items on your menu like mac and cheese, a charcuterie board with different types of cheeses, crackers, and cured meats. And of course, set up a cute photo booth area where everyone can take lots of pictures throughout the party.

This could be as simple as getting cupcakes and adding maraschino cherries on top or serving Shirley Temple drinks.

20. Orange you Glad it’s my 26th Birthday Party

Since we’re on the topic of food puns, let’s continue with an “orange you glad it’s my birthday” party theme. Just as you’d expect, this party is centered around oranges.

So decorate with fresh or faux oranges and, of course, include orange themed items in your party menu.

21. I Never get to Wear This Themed Party

Do you and your friends have outfits that you never get to wear because there’s just no occasion for it? It could be something super extra, a funny costume outfit you bought, or even a pair of shoes that have been sitting in your closet waiting for the right moment.

Then you can use your birthday party as the perfect opportunity to host an “I never get to wear this” themed party. The whole idea is to invite your guests to wear something they rarely get the chance to wear and has just been sitting in their closet.

22. Dress Like You’re Going to the Wrong Event

Another creative and hilarious party theme, is an “oops, I’m at the wrong event” party. With this theme, encourage your guests to get creative with what they wear and dress like they are going to an entirely different event other than a birthday party.

For example, this could look like wearing a cap and gown as if you’re going to a graduation ceremony; wearing a bathing suit and cover up like you’re headed to the beach; wearing a ball gown as if you’re going to prom; or wearing an ugly Christmas sweater like you’re going to a Christmas party. There are so many possibilities, so definitely encourage everyone to get creative with this theme.

23. Favorite Things Birthday Party

For a “favorite things” birthday party, center the whole celebration around your favorite things. Create a party playlist with your favorite songs, serve your favorite foods, and plan fun activities that reflect your personality.

A really cute party activity is hosting a trivia. To see how well everyone knows you, including your likes, dislikes, and fun facts about you.

Nostalgia has really hit its peak lately, and so many of us Gen Z-ers have been feeling extra nostalgic. If you’ve been feeling the same way, host a childhood nostalgia party theme. Decorate like an elementary school style 2000s birthday party with colorful decorations, construction paper garlands, and balloons.

Serve kid friendly foods like chicken tenders, pizza, Capri Suns, and even a charcuterie board. And of course, plan activities like coloring, playing freeze dance, and just having fun letting your inner child shine at your party.

25. Decades Theme Party

Speaking of going back in time, hosting a decade themed party is another 26th birthday party idea. You can choose from so many different decades like a 2000s, 90s, 80s, or 70s theme.

Encourage your guests to dress up based on your chosen decade and transform your space to match the vibe with themed decorations. Lastly, create a playlist filled with popular songs from that era.

Last but not least, on this list of 26th birthday party ideas is to have a seasonal themed party. Whether your birthday lands in the spring, summer, fall, or winter, you can take inspiration from the characteristics of that season and create a party theme around it.

For example, if your birthday is during the summer, you could host an under the sea themed party, a pool party, or even a summer camp themed party.
