15 Last Minute Birthday Party Ideas You can Pull Off Today

If your birthday snuck up on you or you’re planning something last minute for someone else, and you’re scrambling for last minute birthday party ideas, you’re definitely not alone. Pulling together a party in just a few days (or day) can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive to still be fun and memorable.

Last minute birthday party ideas

Last year, I actually changed my mind and decided to throw a birthday party just three days before the date. I was quickly pulling together ideas, texting my friends to see who could come, and figuring out how to make it all work on short notice. Thankfully, they showed up, and everything came together.

And honestly, even though it was last minute, it ended up being one of the most stress free, budget friendly, and fun celebrations. I kept things simple with easy ideas like ordering pizza and grabbing balloons and streamers from Dollar Tree. It turned into a chill, cozy night-in with friends.

For me, the three key components to a great party are people, food, and games, and once you have those covered, everything else just falls into place. So without further ado, here are some last minute birthday party ideas that are fun and stress free.

Last Minute Birthday Party Ideas

1. Grab Cake From the Grocery Store

When it comes to a birthday party, having a cake or some sort of dessert is a “must” on my list. And when it comes to last minute birthday party ideas, grabbing a premade cake from the grocery store is my ultimate cheat code.

I have a local Publix near me that makes delicious cakes. From berry chantilly to strawberry shortcake and your classic vanilla cakes, and they’re always my go to for birthday celebrations. So whether you shop at Publix, Walmart, or even Whole Foods, you can easily grab a cake from the grocery store.

And if you want to elevate it a bit, you can ask if they can add a quick handwritten message on the cake. Or you can pick up a cake topper or birthday candles and add them yourself for a simple and cute finishing touch.

2. Decorate With Balloons

Another easy, budget friendly, and last minute birthday party idea is to use balloons. For me, they really help bring that instant party and festive vibe to any occasion.

And you really don’t have to spend a lot of money on balloons. You can grab them from the dollar store or your local Walmart. If you already have a balloon pump, just blow them up and scatter them on the floor for a simple party feel.

Or, if you want to take it up a notch; you can use balloon ribbon and double sided tape, and hang them from the ceiling so it looks like helium balloons.

3. Order Pizza

When it comes to last minute food ideas, pizza is my ultimate go to. It’s quick, doesn’t require any cooking, and a lot of people love it, which makes it a perfect party option.

You can keep it simple with classic cheese and pepperoni, or mix in a few specialty toppings to give your spread a little variety.

4. Serve Sandwich Sliders

If you’re looking for something other than pizza, sliders are another great food idea. From cheesesteak to Italian, and ham and cheese, there are so many different sandwich options that you can make for your party.

Plus, they’re great because they’re handheld. And work really well for a more chill gathering, where people are not expected to sit at a table for a full meal.

5. Chips and Dips

Chips and dip are another delicious and last minute birthday party food idea. One of my favorites is making spinach dip. All I have to do is combine the ingredients, place the mixture in a baking dish, and that takes about 5 to 10 minutes. Then I just pop it in the oven and let it do the rest of the work. When it comes out, people absolutely love it and it looks like I spent way more time on it than I actually did.

Some other dip ideas you can try are Rotel dip, or you can even grab ready made options from the grocery aisle like Tostitos salsa or queso dip.

6. Build Your Own Taco Bar

Now when it comes to an idea that not only serves as a food option but also doubles as a fun activity, a taco bar hits the nail on the head. It’s a great last minute idea and will look like you’ve put way more time into it than you actually did.

All you need are tortillas, toppings, and different meat options. For the meat, you can quickly make ground beef or ground turkey in under 15 minutes. Then you just set up your taco bar station so guests can come up to the table and build their own tacos.

Some other great protein options you can add include shrimp, (just be mindful of any shellfish allergies) since shrimp cooks very quickly. You can also use shredded chicken or regular chicken as your protein base.

Below are some topping ideas that you can include in your taco bar:

  • Meat (ground beef, ground turkey, shrimp, chicken)
  • Shredded cheese
  • Sour cream
  • Pico de gallo
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Tomatoes
  • Jalapeños
  • Avocados
  • Onions
  • Cilantro
  • Lime

7. Use Pre Packaged Snacks

I can’t mention last minute food ideas, without bringing up pre packaged snacks. From chips to croissants, donuts, cookies, pastries, fruit, or even grabbing a few ingredients to build your own charcuterie board, these options are quick and easy.

They’re perfect for satisfying your guests’ hunger and giving them a variety of things to snack on throughout the party.

8. Play Music

Moving on from the food ideas, the next step is setting the vibe for your party, and a great way to do that is with music.

Whether you’re going for upbeat songs that people can sing along to, or just want some chill background music, playing music is an easy way to set the tone for the party.

9. Play Charades

When it comes to games, charades is a solid option. It requires no materials, so it’s essentially *free*, it’s easy to play, and it will have everyone laughing and being playfully competitive.

10. Play Karaoke

Karaoke is another one of my favorite ideas, and any opportunity where my friends and I get to sing, always guarantees double the laughs. Most of us are not “good” singers, which honestly makes our karaoke performances even funnier.

So if you’re looking for something a little silly that will have everyone laughing and having fun, having a karaoke session is perfect. You don’t need many materiaeither. All you need is a TV to pull up karaoke songs. And whoever is singing can use anything like a bottle or even a remote, as a microphone while they put on their performance.

11. Play Musical chairs

If you have a lot of chairs in your space, like in your dining room, you can easily set them up and host a few rounds of musical chairs. All you need are some chairs, music, and players and you’re all good to go.

Now, this is one of my favorite party activities because it’s so funny and interesting. In seeing the players get super competitive in trying to grab a seat before the music stops.

12. Decorate With Fresh Flowers

Fresh flowers are a beautiful decor option, especially if you’re going for a sit down or more formal party. You can create your own bouquet by grabbing a few different stems or choosing pre-made bouquet options from the store.
