Celebrating solo doesn’t have to feel sad or awkward at all. Honestly, it can be one of the most refreshing ways to spend your birthday. From cozy at home birthday ideas to fun solo adventures; these ideas are all about romanticizing your birthday, reflecting on the past year, and fully celebrating you.

Things to do on Your Birthday Alone

1. Make a Cute Charcuterie Board & Binge a Movie

If you love charcuterie boards, then you’re going to want to try this one out. Grab your favorite cheeses, cured meats, crackers, and fruits, and make a personal charcuterie board.

Once it’s all set, put on a movie and snack away. You can rewatch your fav comfort movie or use this time to watch something new.

2. Go Strawberry Picking

If you have a spring or summer birthday, this is a good time to lean into seasonal activities like strawberry picking.

Wear a cute outfit, head to a local strawberry farm, and snap a few selfies while picking the sweetest strawberries. After you’re done, you can take your strawberries home to eat as-is or use them in a super tasty recipe.

3. Go on a Birthday Picnic

Grab a blanket, some snacks, and a book or coloring book, then head to the park for a solo birthday picnic. You can even bring a mini speaker and play some music or a podcast in the background.

4. Prepare Your Birthday Dinner

If you love to cook, romanticize your birthday dinner by making it yourself. Light a candle. Play some slow jazz (or whatever music you’re into). Gather your ingredients. And prepare your birthday dinner with extra love and care.

5. Go Out for Dinner

Another way to bring those birthday dinner vibes to life, is by going to a restaurant. I know going out to eat alone can feel a little nerve racking. But trust me, it’s not as scary as it seems. If it helps you feel more comfortable, bring headphones and listen to music, a podcast, or an audiobook while you eat.

And honestly? No one is really paying attention as much as you might think. Plus, dining solo is a great way to build confidence, get comfortable in social settings, and truly enjoy your own company.

6. Go on a Solo Trip

Whether it’s a weekend getaway, a few days away, or even a full week, going on a solo trip for your birthday can be such a special experience. It’s a chance to reset, explore somewhere new, and celebrate yourself with new experiences.

That said, always use good judgment when choosing where to go. Since you’ll be traveling alone, PRIORITIZE safety. Share your location with a trusted loved one, stay in well populated areas, and avoid walking alone late at night.

7. Buy a Mini Birthday Cake

One of my favorite things about my local grocery store is the dessert section. They sell cake by the slice and the cutest mini cakes. If your grocery store or a nearby bakery does the same, take full advantage of it. And treat yourself to a personal sized birthday cake that’s just for you.

8. Have an At Home Spa Day

If you’re looking for at home birthday ideas, then have a spa day (or spa night); depending on what time you want to have.

Take a shower, light a candle, put on some slow music, and do some full body stretches. Do your hair, pamper your skin, and slow everything down. Let the day be all about pouring into yourself, releasing stress, and feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

9. Get Your Nails Done

If you love getting your nails done, your birthday is a great opportunity to get a new nail set. It’s also a great thing to do on your birthday alone, because you don’t have to worry about feeling awkward or out of place. Since getting your nails done is a casual thing that many people do by themselves.

10. Visit a Museum

Visit a museum, art gallery, or even a zoo and enjoy learning something new. Take your time looking at different exhibits, seeing new artifacts or artwork, and if you’re at the zoo, enjoy watching all the different animals.

11. Spend a Day at the Beach

Pack your bathing suit, beach towel, and bag, then head to the beach for a sunny and chill day by the water.

Bring a book to read while you soak up the sun. And if you’re like me and love collecting seashells, take a walk along the shore and pick up a few seashells along the way.

12. Book a Pottery Class

If you have a pottery studio near you, look into booking a one time pottery class for your birthday. A good friend of mine did this one year and absolutely loved it. The instructors were able to guide her one-on-one, and she left with a beautiful little bowl that she still uses to this day.

13. Go Shopping

Another great activity on this list of things to do on your birthday alone, is to go shopping.

Whether you’re just browsing. Picking up items that catch your eye. Or grabbing a few things from your wish list. Shopping is a great solo activity. And since it’s your birthday, you can treat yourself to a few little goodies as a gift to you.

14. Go to the Movie Theater

Going to the movie theater is another great solo birthday activity. So if there’s a new movie that came out that you’re interested in, head to the movies and watch it on the big screen.

15. Watch a Play or Theater Show

If there’s a theater or performing arts center near you; check out their upcoming shows and buy a ticket to a performance that sparks your interest.

16. Grab Birthday Freebies

Saying that something is free is a great way to grab my attention. So next up on the list of birthday ideas, is redeeming “birthday freebies”.

So many restaurants offer birthday freebies (rewards) as a way to say “happy birthday” and invite you into their free loyalty programs.

From free donuts at Krispy Kreme to free wings at Buffalo Wild Wings; check out the link below for a big list of companies that offer birthday rewards.

17. Take Birthday Pictures

Put on a cute outfit, do your makeup if you’d like, and take some birthday pictures. You can take some selfies, prop your phone on something to get full body shots, or even ask a friendly stranger to take a picture for you.

18. Catch the Sunrise

If you’re an early bird, or maybe even if you’re not and you’re looking to do something different for your birthday; wake up early and go somewhere scenic to catch the sunrise.

19. Go on a Nature Walk

Going on a nature walk can pair perfectly with catching the sunrise. Take a walk or hike, and once you reach a scenic spot, sit back, relax, and watch as the sunrise lights up the morning sky.

I don’t know about you, but I always feel so grounded when I’m surrounded by nature. So, you can use this time to reflect on yourself, your birthday, and the year ahead. Just breathe in, breathe out, and celebrate the gift of experiencing another birthday.

20. Go Out for Brunch

One of my favorite brunch spots has candied bacon on the menu, and I love going there for special occasions. Especially my birthday!

If you have a favorite brunch restaurant or just love brunch food, treat yourself to a meal out. It’s a delicious way to start your birthday off on a satisfying note.

21. Book a Hotel Room and Have a Staycation

Last but not least, on this list of things to do on your birthday alone, is a staycation. It’s great if you’re wanting that “vacation feeling” without the stress of taking a flight or driving long distance.

During your staycation, explore new restaurants, check out attractions you’ve never visited, and spend some time relaxing in your hotel room.
