What You Need to Know as a First Time Bridesmaid

What you need to know as a first time bridesmaid, is something I wish I had read before standing next to my best friend on her wedding day. It’s honestly hard to believe that it’s already been almost a year since I was a bridesmaid in her wedding. And now they’re getting ready to celebrate their first anniversary.

What you need to know as a first time bridesmaid

Being a bridesmaid was such an honor and a joy, but it also came with responsibilities I didn’t fully understand. If you’ve recently been asked to be a bridesmaid, here’s what you need to know as a first time bridesmaid based on my personal experience.

Being a bridesmaid meant walking alongside my best friend during one of the most meaningful (and stressful) seasons of her life. Not just on the wedding day, but throughout the planning process and even into marriage. While it was an incredible experience, there are a few important things I wish I had known beforehand.

What You Need to Know as a First Time Bridesmaid

The Financial Cost of Being a Bridesmaid

First and foremost, when it comes to anything wedding related, the biggest topic that usually comes to mind is cost. Weddings can be expensive. Not only for the bride and groom, but for the wedding party as well.

One of the main things I wish I knew as a first time bridesmaid, was that the cost goes far beyond just the bridesmaid dress. In addition to the dress, there are often expenses for alterations, shoes, accessories, and hair and makeup. On top of that, there are events like the bridal shower and bachelorette party, which can quickly add up. While every wedding is different, it’s important to communicate to the bride-to-be on what you can afford.

The Emotional Cost and Commitment

Another important thing you need to know as a first time bridesmaid, is the emotional cost that comes with the role. Being chosen as a bridesmaid isn’t just about standing in a dress on the wedding day, it’s a sign of trust.

The bride has chosen you to be by her side, to support her, encourage her, and walk with her through both the exciting and stressful parts of wedding planning. It truly is an honor when you think about it that way.

There were many moments where I was simply a listening ear. Whether it was about venue stress, last minute cancellations, or the pressure of planning such a big event. Supporting the bride emotionally, speaking life into her, and reminding her that everything will come together is a huge part of the bridesmaid role.

Helping Plan the Bachelorette Party

Traditionally, bridesmaids help plan the bachelorette party. And this is one of the most fun (and sometimes challenging) parts of being a bridesmaid.

The goal of the bachelorette party is to help the bride relax, unwind, and have fun surrounded by her closest friends in the middle of wedding planning chaos.

For my friend’s bachelorette party, we knew she wanted to travel. Months earlier, she casually mentioned wanting to go on a winter trip, so we decided to surprise her with a cozy bachelorette trip to Utah. As a bridesmaid group, we even covered her expenses for the trip.

It ended up being such a memorable and special experience, not just for her, but for all of us. So, when planning a bachelorette party, consider what the bride genuinely loves.

  • If she’s adventurous, a trip or weekend getaway could be perfect.
  • If she’s more of a laid back person, a spa day or a pottery class might be ideal.
  • If she loves parties and get-togethers, then she might like a themed bachelorette party.

Do a Hair and Makeup Trial Run

One thing I really appreciated about my friend’s wedding was having the option to do my own hair and makeup. This saved me a couple hundred dollars by not booking a professional stylist.

In the weeks leading up to the wedding, I practiced my makeup look several times. However, I do wish I had tested the longevity of my makeup by wearing it for an entire day to see how it held up, when I’d need touch-ups, and how it reacted to oil or humidity.

Overall, my makeup turned out great, and the bride loved it. Which was a win-win in my book.

I also wish I had done a hair trial before the wedding. I ended up styling my hair the night before in a low curly ponytail. And while it worked out, having a trial would have helped me feel more confident. If you’re doing curls, it’s helpful to see how long they last, especially if you’re planning on dancing the night away at the reception.

If the bride gives you the flexibility to do your own hair and makeup; take advantage of that freedom and have fun practicing beforehand so everything feels stress free on the big day.

What You Need to Know Before Becoming a Bridesmaid

What You Need to Know Before Becoming a Bridesmaid

Overall, when it comes to what you need to know as a first time bridesmaid, understand that this season can come with a mix of emotions. For the bride and for you. Wedding planning isn’t just about one day; it’s about preparing for marriage and everything that comes after.

Being chosen as a bridesmaid means the bride trusts you. Show up for her emotionally and physically, especially during stressful moments.

Help her to slow down, find pockets of laughter, and enjoy the process. Those moments of joy and support can completely change the wedding planning experience and make the journey to “I do” that much more enjoyable.
